Clinical Significance
HDL Cholesterol is a useful test to assess the risk for cardiovascular disease. It is increased following regular exercise, moderate alcohol consumption and with oral estrogen therapy. Decreased levels are associated with obesity, stress, cigarette smoking and diabetes mellitus. For every 1 mg/dL decrease in HDL, the risk for cardiovascular disease increases by 2-3%.
