Cord Blood Hold
MessageLabeling must be performed at the patient’s bedside, immediately following specimen collection, by the person who collected the specimen.
Specimens will be rejected if there is evidence that the labeling did not take place at the bedside.
This test is ordered to document receipt and storage of a cord blood sample for an infant.
A Cord Blood Evaluation is ordered by the Blood Bank if any of the following apply:

- The mother of the baby is Rh-negative or weak D positive
- The mother of the baby is group O
- The mother of the baby has clinically-significant antibodies (current or historical)

Instructions
Cord blood samples must be designated as "cord blood" and be labeled with the infant's:
A. Complete name
B. Medical record number
C. Date and time of collection
D. Collector's identification.
Transport Container
EDTA (lavender/purple top) preferred. No additive (red-top) is acceptable
Specimen Stability
Room temperature: 24 hours
Refrigerated: EDTA <7 days, clotted <3 days
Frozen: Unacceptable
Refrigerated: EDTA <7 days, clotted <3 days
Frozen: Unacceptable
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Any collection container containing serum-separator (SST)
Improper, incorrect or incomplete labeling

Limitations
Specimen can not be used for compatibility testing (crossmatch)
A care-provider must provide a documented order for any other testing requested on a cord blood specimen.
