Preferred Specimen
  • 10 mL sputum in a Total-Fix vial
  • 10 mL bronchoalveolar lavage in a Total-Fix vial


Minimum Volume
2 mL sputum or BAL


Other Acceptable Specimens

Contact the SQL Parasitology Bench at (602) 685-5135, if you are considering sending the following specimens:

CSF: Trichrome for Naegleria fowleri or Acanthamoeba spp. or Balamuthia spp.; Calcofluor for Acanthamoeba
Biopsy or Scrapings of the Eye or Contact lens or Lens solution: Calcofluor or Culture for Acantamoeba; MAF or Modified Trichrome for Microsporidia 
Aspirate, Liver or Spleen:  Trichrome for E. histolytica, Opistorchis, and Fasciola 
 


Instructions
Place enough specimen into vial to bring the liquid level up to the black fill line in a Total-fix vial.
