Test Code
FIB

Preferred Specimen
3.2% sodium citrate - blue top tube

Minimum Volume
1.8 mL

Instructions
The light blue capped tubes, containing 3.2% buffered sodium citrate, used for coagulation testing must be allowed to fill completely (after filling a small air space will normally be present). We cannot accept a short filled tube. Centrifuge within 24 hours of collection. If testing isn’t completed within 24 hours, transfer plasma to plastic tube using a plastic transfer pipette.  Freeze specimen < 20°C(Exception-WYMC requires centrifugation and freezing withing 8 hurs of collection)

Transport Container
Room temperature preferred (15-25°C)

Specimen Stability
·         Unopened Collection Tube  < 24hours (8 hours for WYMC)
·         Opened Collection Tube  < 4 hour,
·         Frozen plasma 2 weeks at  -20° to -50°C

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

·         clotted specimens
·         underfilled or overfilled tube
·         collection in 3.8% Citrate
·         specimens collected in expired tubes
·         serum samples
·         specimen past stability
·         thawed frozen samples
·         Hemolyzed, icteric, or lipemic sample

Setup Schedule
Performed daily

Report Available
Within 4 hours of receipt of laboratory

Clinical Significance
When unexplained bleeding or abnormal clotting occurs, it may be of clinical importance to quantitate fibrinogen. Fibrinogen is also a useful marker in the evaluation of several disease states including Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, liver disease and inflammatory diseases.
