Clinical Significance
Determination of CK activity is employed in the diagnosis and monitoring of acute and chronic myopathies, to include rhabdomyolysis and Duchene muscular dystrophy. In addition, CK may be used as a sensitive, but non-specific biomarker to facilitate diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction. Due to this lack of specificity, CK has generally been replaced by cardiac troponin as the preferred biomarker for this purpose.
