Preferred Specimen
1.5 mL serum from a serum separator tube (SST) (1 mL min). Centrifuge as soon as possible after clot formation.


Instructions
Due to potential assay interference, do not collect samples from patients receiving high dose biotin therapy (i.e >5 mg/day) until at least 8 hours (optimally 24 to 72 hours) following the last dose.

Clinical Significance
Measurements of testosterone are used in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders involving the male sex hormones (androgens),
including primary and secondary hypogonadism, delayed or precocious puberty, impotence in males, and in females hirsutism
(excessive hair) and virilization (masculinization) due to tumors, polycystic ovaries, and adrenogenital syndromes.
