Preferred Specimen

2 mL serum (SST). (minimum 0.5 mL)

Instructions

SST or Red top: Avoid hemolysis. Invert a minimum of 5 times, then allow to clot in an upright position for 30 minutes. Centrifuge the tube for at least 10 minutes. Keep tightly stoppered.

Clinical Significance

Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) is a DNA virus of the herpes virus group that causes chicken pox (varicella) and shingles (zoster). Serologic screening of direct health care providers and individuals in high risk groups is needed to avoid spread of infection. Demonstration of VZV IgG antibody in a single serum is consistent with immunity.
