Clinical Significance
Parasites may invade all body tissues; therefore all types of specimens may need to be evaluated. The choice of specimen depends upon the suspected parasit or category of parasites. Specimens are screened for intestinal parasites in this procedure. When negative results are obtained for fecal samples, if clinically indicated, other specimen types should be evaluated. Urine may present schitomoma. Sigmoidscopic material and liver aspirates may present amoebas. Sputum may present Ova. Interfering substances include the following: 1) Bismuth or Barium (wait 7-10 days) 2) Antimicrobial agents (wait 2-3 weeks) 3) Gallbladder Dye (wait 3 weeks)
