Oxygen Dissociation, p50

Test Code
P50

Alias/See Also
Hemoglobin, Oxygen Dissociation Curve

Preferred Specimen
5 mL sodium heparin whole blood and 5 mL sodium heparin tube from a normal control

Minimum Volume
1 mL

Instructions
Normal control is drawn at the same time from a normal, unrelated, non-smoking individual. Label only as 'NORMAL CONTROL'. Refrigerate specimens immediately post draw and do not open tubes. Rubberband control and patient sample together. Specimens must reach reference lab within 72 hours of collection.

Transport Container
Original collection vial

Transport Temperature
Refrigerated

Specimen Stability
72 hours refirgerated

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
No control vial sent, lithium heparin tube

Report Available
2-4 days

Reference Range
24-30 mm Hg

Clinical Significance
Increased oxygen affinity of hemoglobin, reflected in a low p50, left-shifted oxygen dissociation curve, and loss of normal sigmoidal configuration, is characteristic of many hemoglobin variants that are responsible for polycythemia. Measurement of oxygen affinity is the most important method for diagnosis of these disorders.
