Preferred Specimen
Whole Blood Heparin syringe OR PICO Syringe
Minimum Volume
1-3 ML
Instructions
Cap syringe to maintain anaerobic conditions. Transport immediately at room temperature. If analysis is delayed more than 30 minutes, store in ice water. Indicate the patient temperature and FIO2 if correction is desired. This test is not drawn by the Laboratory. Arterial blood gases are drawn by Respiratory Therapy and processed in the laboratory.
Transport Container
HEPARINIZED SYRINGE AT ROOM TEMPERATURE

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Reason for rejection: unlabeled sample, clotted, delay in transport, needle attached, or air bubbles present.
