COLLECT 1 LI HEP(LIGHT GREEN)TUBE, SPIN DOWN AND SEND TO LAB. CAN ALSO BE DONE OFF A GOLD TOP TUBE. LET CLOT FOR 30 MINUTES, SPIN DOWN AND SEND TO LAB. CAN ALSO BE DONE OFF OF A 24HR URINE SAMPLE IN A JUG PROVIDED MY LAB. MAKE SURE FULL NAME, FULL SSN, DATES/TIMES THAT PT STARTED AND STOPPED COLLECTION. MUST BE REFRIGERATED WHEN NOT PLACING URINE IN JUG. FIRST MORNING URINE OF FIRST MORNING VOID IN TOILET AS NORMAL. EVERYTHING AFTER THAT INCLUDING SECOND MORNINGS FIRST URINE NEEDS TO GO IN JUG.

Clinical Significance
Magnesium measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of hypomagnesemia (abnormally low plasma levels of magnesium) and hypermagnesemia (abnormally high plasma levels of magnesium). Magnesium is decreased in chronic nephritis, acute pancreatitis, and alcoholic cirrhosis. It is increased in acute or chronic renal failure and Addison's Disease.
