HEPATITIS C ANTIBODY SCREEN WITH REFLEX TO HCV PCR

Message
Useful for: Detecting and diagnosing chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection
If the HCV antibody screen is reactive, then HCV RNA by PCR, Quantitative (test code HCVQR) will be performed at an additional charge.

Test Code
LAB304734

Preferred Specimen
One 7 mL lavender top tube

Minimum Volume
3.5 mL blood
Required for Testing: 1.5 mL plasma

Instructions
Avoid freeze-thaw cycling
Note: The Fairmont campus will perform the screening test and send the confirmation test to Morgantown.

Sample preferred to be centrifuged within 2 hours, but can be stored on the red cells. Refer to specimen stabilty.

Transport Temperature
Frozen

Specimen Stability
For Plasma and whole blood
Ambient: 7 days   Refrigerated: 14 days   Frozen: 3 months

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Turbid, lipemic, grossly hemolyzed, or heat-inactivated specimens. Cadaveric specimens

Methodology
Anti-HCV Antibody: Chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay  HCV Quantitative PCR: AmpliPrep/COBAS TaqMan HCV

Setup Schedule
Sunday- Saturday

Clinical Significance
A nonreactive test result does not exclude the possibility of exposure to or infection with hepatitis C virus.
Nonreactive test results in individuals with prior exposure to HCV may be due to antibody levels being below the detection limit of this assay
or to lack of antibody reactivity to the recombinant antigens used in this assay.
Immunocompromised patients who have HCV may produce levels of antibody below the sensitivity of this assay and may not be detected as
reactive/positive.
