Preferred Specimen
Culturette swab


Instructions
With a tongue blade, depress the tongue so the back of the throat is clearly visible. Without getting buccal or tongue contamination, insert the culturette swab to the back of the throat and swab both tonsillar areas, the posterior pharynx, and any areas of
inflammation, ulceration, or exudation. A good gag reflex indicates a satisfactory specimen.


Transport Temperature
Ambient - 2 hrs at 20-25°C.   If delayed transport to the laboratory, refrigerate (4-8°C) up to 48 hrs unless looking for N. gonorrohoea.
 


Specimen Stability
Ambient: 2 hours, If delayed transport to the laboratory, refrigerate (4-8°C) up to 48 hrs unless looking for N. gonorrohoea.
N. gonorhea – Amibent for 24 hrs at 20-25°C.  (See LAB304868 – Throat Culture – GC),

 


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Dry swabs and specimens that have been refrigerated will be rejected for culture. 
Eswabs received after 48 hours will be rejected
