Clinical Significance
Chromatin Antibodies play a central role in the autoimmune response if systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and are common sub-serology
findings in other connective tissue disease workups. Chromatin antibodies recognize histone/dsDNA complexes common to cells in a
non-replicating state. Antinuclear sub-serology testing is NOT suggested unless a positive immunofluorescence result is obtained on initial ANA testing. Frequency of these antibodies in the non-diseased population is unknown and positivity does not necessarily suggest that a connective
tissue disease is present.
