Reference Range
Negative: <0.9
Indeterminate: 0.9 - 1.0
Positive: ≥1.1
This assay is type-specific and will differentiate between HSV 1 and HSV 2 infections. A single positive result only indicates previous immunologic exposure. The performance of this assay has not been established for pediatric populations, for neonatal screening, or for the testing of immunocompromised patients. Levels early in the course of infection may not have detectable levels of HSV IgG. Test cannot differentiate between recent and old infections.

Clinical Significance
HSV Type 1 is associated with lesions above the waist; HSV Type 2 is sexually transmitted and is a cause of generalized infections of the newborn. Also useful in undiagnosed congenital diseases and etiology of prolonged fever in immunosupressed patients.
