Patient Preparation
Standard venipuncture. Avoid traumatic puncture. Invert tube "end to end" to prevent clotting. Tube MUST be full for proper whole blood to anticoagulant ratio

  • Sample received more than 2 days after collection (has not been centrifuged and frozen)

Clinical Significance
Evaluate response to heparin, liver function, and identify hypercoaguability. If blood is drawn from an indwelling catheter, flush line with saline and the first 5ml of blood discarded. Do not thaw and refreeze.
