Clinical Significance
A prolongation of a patient's clotting times may indicate a factor deficiency or the presence of an inhibitor. A factor deficiency is suspected if the clotting times are corrected after mixing the patient's sample with normal plasma. If the clotting time of such a mixture resembles the abnormal value, an inhibitor is most likely present.
