Patient Preparation
Collect patient specimen by swabbing the posterior pharynx, tonsils and other inflamed areas. Any exudates should be touched. Avoid touching the tongue, cheeks and teeth with the swab.

Transport specimen to the laboratory as soon as possible.

Limitations
Adequate specimen collection on younger patients may be difficult, and thus, contribute to the false-negative rate. A positive result can be relied upon as a rational basis to begin therapy.
