This test does not require a baseline (fasting) sample. Draw specimen 1 hour after administering 50g oral gluocse (Glucola), or dose specified by physician.

Patient Preparation
Patient need not be fasting. Physician may specify the amount of oral glucose (Glucola) used.  If amount not specified, provide patient with a 50g oral glucose drink (Glucola) then draw sample 1 hour after consumption.

Instructions
Centrifuge ASAP and separate serum or plasma from red cells to minimize the loss of gluocse through glycolysis.

Clinical Significance
Establish the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus in the pregnant patient.  This test is the initial screen in the two-step screening approach recommended by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynocology (ACOG)
