Patient Preparation
Avoid alcoholic beverages. Follow instructions on collecting a 24 hour collection (see below)
Minimum Volume
- 10 mL urine aliquot (20 mL urine aliquot optimal)
- 0.5 mL serum (1 mL serum optimal)

Instructions
Please provide patient height and weight. If sending aliquot of sample, MUST include total volume.
- Mix the urine specimen well and measure the 24-hour volume
- RECORD THE TOTAL VOLUME
- Aliquot 20 mL of urine into urine tube or sterile container
- Centrifuge blood tube(s) for complete separation of serum or plasma from red cells
- If whole blood was collected, aliquot plasma
- Refrigerate both urine and serum or plamsa specimens until tested.

Clinical Significance
Creatinine Clearance is used to evaluate the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Clearance is defined as that volume of plasma from which a measured amount of substance could be completely eliminated into the urine per unit of time.
