Clinical Significance
Ascertain the likelihood of an Rh-positive child in genetic counseling; other antigen typings are used to include or exclude antibody specificities or ascertain the likelihood of hemolytic disease of the newborn in cases of maternal antibody; find compatible blood for recipients who have certain atypical antibodies; test the phenotype of the husband to a woman sensitized to blood group antigen.Usually performed on patients in whom antibodies are encountered, to support identification of antibody, typing of donor units to assure that they lack the antigen for which the patient has an antibody.
