Preferred Specimen
1.)
- Bone Marrow Aspirate Biopsy for slides: The first sterile syringe should have 0.5 to 1 ml aspirate sample with full of spicules. The sample should be handed to tech/assistance to evaluates if there are adequate spicules are present or not. Pour extra samples into the purple tube for making aspirate slides.
- Bone marrow Aspirate biopsy for cytogenetics/flow cytometry test: The second sterile syringe will have 5-7 ml of marrow and placed into 2 heparinized green top tubes. Deliver these 2 tubes to central receiving for send out test. Some additional aspirate should be placed into a red top tube for clot sections, this tube goes to surgical path.
- Bone Marrow Core Biopsy: A piece of bone(s) should be collected into the formalin fixative solution (10% neutral buffered formalin). Make some touch prep slides with the core before it is placed into the fixative solution.
- Roswell Park Memorial Institute (RPMI) medium: RPMI medium is a nutritive liquid, used in bone marrow collection when there is insufficient sample aspirated for all test requested or a "dry tap" occurs. A fresh core specimen (A piece of bone(s)) can be placed directly into RPMI solution for cytogenetics, flow cytometry or other testing. A notation on the requisition is needed to indicate the core biopsy in RPMI is included.
