Clinical Significance
Elevated bilirubin levels may be caused by liver disease (hepatitis), blood disorders (hemolytic anemia), or blockage of the bile ducts. Hyperbilirubinemia in a newborn baby can cause brain damage (kernicterus) and other serious problems.
