24 Hour Urine Container without preservative

Patient Preparation
Discard first morning urine on day of collection and note the time. Collect all urine voided during the next 24 hours.Refrigerate the urine during entire collection. See 24 urine collection instructions link below.
Minimum Volume
5 mL aliquot (20 mL aliquot optimal)
Instructions
- Mix the specimen well and measure the 24 Hour volume (RECORD THE TOTAL VOLUME)
- Pour off 20 mL of urine into a separate plastic screw-cap container
- Refrigerate if not tested immediately
- Sample will be acidified with 6N HCL to a pH <2 prior to testing

Specimen Stability
Urine may contain larger quantities of organic phosphates, which can decompose on exposure to elevated temperatures. Keep refrigerated.

Clinical Significance
Absorbed phosphate, under the influence of parathyroid hormone is excreted in the kidney. Measurement of urinary phosphorus reflects kidney function as well as parathyroid function.
