Clinical Significance
Vancomycin is an antibiotic used in the treatment of bacterial infections, especially methicillin-resistant staphylococci. Vancomycin is also used in treatment for penicillin-allergic patients who cannot receive or have failed to respond to other drugs, including the penicillins and/or cephalosporins. Therapeutic drug monitoring is useful to optimize dose and detect the toxicity.
