Preferred Specimen

15.76 mL serum collected in a red-top tube (no gel) and
3 mL whole blood collected in an EDTA (lavender-top) tube and
10 mL random urine collected in a urinalysis transport tube (yellow-top, blue fill line, preservative tube) and
2 mL serum collected in an SST® (red-top) tube

Patient Preparation
Specimen collection after fluorescein dye angiography should be delayed for at least 3 days. For patients on hemodialysis, specimen collection should be delayed for 2 weeks. According to the assay manufacturer Siemens: Samples containing fluorescein can produce falsely depressed values when tested with the ADVIA Centaur TSH3 Ultra assay.

Serum SST: 1.5 mL
Random urine: 1 mL
Whole blood: 1.5 mL
Serum red-top (no gel): 7.88 mL
