Clinical Significance
p53 is a tumor suppressor gene. Mutations of the p53 gene are detectable in approximately half of all carcinomas. Detection of p53 by Immunohistochemistry serves as a surrogate marker of the mutant p53 gene. Generally, the presence of mutant p53 gene expression is associated with a poorer prognosis.
