Preferred Specimen
Submit two separate specimens:
Whole blood from a full EDTA (lavender-top) tube and
1 mL serum from a serum separator tube (SST), received spun or red-top tube (no gel)


Minimum Volume
0.5 mL for each sample type


Other Acceptable Specimens
Preferred: Submit two separate specimens: Whole blood (1 full EDTA lavender-top tube) and 1 mL serum

Acceptable: Submit two separate specimens: Whole blood (1 full EDTA lavender-top tube) and 1 mL plasma collected in an EDTA (lavender-top) tube

Clinical Significance
To assist with control of blood glucose levels, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) has recommended glycated hemoglobin testing (HbA1c) twice a year for patients with stable glycemia, and quarterly for patients with poor glucose control. Interpretative ranges are based on ADA guidelines.
