Preferred Specimen
2 mL frozen plasma collected in a sodium heparin (green-top) for each specimen


Patient Preparation
Patients should be resting supine for 1 hour in a non-stressful environment. An indwelling catheter should be placed 30 min before collection of the baseline sample.

Minimum Volume
1 mL (each specimen)

Instructions
Collect baseline sample before administration of clonidine (0.3 mg per 70 kg body weight). Collect samples at 1, 2 and 3 hours using indwelling catheter.

Note:
 Indwelling catheter should be placed 30 min before collection of the baseline sample.

Clinical Significance
Catecholamines include the hormones epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Catecholamines, along with VMA, are produced in chromaffin cell tumors, pheochromocytoma, ganglioneuroma, and neuroblastoma. Symptoms of pheochromocytomas include episodic hypertension, headaches, sweating, heart palpitations, and anxiety.
