Preferred Specimen
10 mL 24-hour urine and 10 mL 24-hour urine preserved with HCL
Minimum Volume
5 mL each specimen
Instructions
Prepare two sample aliquots from the same 24-hour well-mixed urine collection:
Sample aliquot #1: 10 mL (5 mL min), no preservative. Pour urine aliquot into a leak proof urine transport container. Record the 24-hr urine total volume in mL and "No Preservative" on the specimen container. Record the 24-hr urine total volume on the test requisition form.
Sample aliquot #2: 10 mL (5 mL min), pH adjusted to < 3. Pour urine aliquot into a clean, acid-washed, detergent-free leak proof container. Adjust pH to < 3 with 6NHCL. Record 24-hr total volume in mL and "HCL" on the specimen container. Ensure that the 24-hr total volume has been recorded on the test requisition form.
