Includes
If TB is isolated for the first time or after three months after the first isolate from a patient, susceptibilities will be performed at an additional charge (CPT code(s): 87190 per drug).
Other mycobacteria susceptibility testing will be performed on request at an additional charge (CPT code(s): 87186).

Preferred Specimen
Pure isolate collected on an agar slant in a double-walled container

Other Acceptable Specimens
Positive broth bottle or tube

Instructions
Stability of isolates will be determined by the laboratory. Organism must be viable.
For Nocardia Identification refer to test code 14673 Bacterial Identification and Susceptibility, Aerobic or 34118 Bacterial Identification, Aerobic.

Transport Temperature
Room temperature

Specimen Stability
Room temperature: 30 days
Refrigerated: 30 days
Frozen: Unacceptable

Methodology

Nucleic Acid Probe • Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization-Time of Flight • DNA Sequencing

Setup Schedule
Report available: 30-31 days

Clinical Significance
There are more than 70 species of mycobacteria of which the primary pathogen is M. tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is a chronic, granulomatous disease caused by M. tuberculosis. Identification, and, if appropriate, antibiotic susceptibility, is required to initiate necessary therapy
