7 mL aliquot of a well-mixed 24-hour urine collected in an acid-washed or metal-free container


Minimum Volume
3 mL


Instructions
Collect without preservative and transport in a plastic, acid-washed or metal-free container. Record total volume on specimen container and on test requisition. To avoid contamination, do not measure 24-hour volume.

Clinical Significance
Zinc is an essential element involved in a myriad of enzyme systems including wound healing, immune function, and fetal development. Zinc measurements are used to detect and monitor industrial, dietary, and accidental exposure to zinc. Also, zinc measurements may be used to evaluate health and monitor response to treatment.
