Clinical Significance

Steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) catalyzes the initial rate-limiting in the formation of steroid hormones. Affected individuals present with deficiency of cortisol and aldosterone, as well as early precursors in the synthesis of steroid hormones (Pregnenalone; DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone). Additional testing may be required to establish a diagnosis.
