Clinical Significance
Antibody to Aquaporin 4 causes neuromyelitis optica (NMO), a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system often confused diagnostically with multiple sclerosis (MS) and/or transverse myelitis. NMO causes optic neuritis and transverse myelitis. Early discrimination between MS and NMO is important, as optimum treatment for both diseases may differ considerably.
