Clinical Significance
Like respiratory allergies, animal allergies pose a significant risk for the development of asthma and rhinitis. Blood IgE tests using whole allergen extracts from cats provide a sensitive screening method to diagnose pet sensitization. In addition, the cat dander component panel is an IgE blood test using individual recombinant proteins from cats, improving specificity compared to animal extract assays. Thus, the cat dander component panel helps differentiate an actual cat allergy from a cross-reactive pet allergy.
