Preferred Specimen
1 mL serum collected in each of three separate red-top tubes (no gel)
Minimum Volume
0.25 mL (x3) serum • 0.25 mL (x2) plasma
Other Acceptable Specimens
Plasma collected in: EDTA (lavender-top), sodium heparin (green-top) or lithium heparin (green-top) tubes
Instructions
Draw baseline specimen. Draw another specimen 30 minutes and 60 mintues after stimulation.
Serum Separator Tubes (SST®) are unacceptable. Draw blood in a red-top tube (no gel).
Separate serum after clotting. Ship serum refrigerated or frozen. Do not submit glass tubes. Draw "upright" samples at least 1/2 hour after patient sits up.

FDA Status
This test was developed and its analytical performance characteristics have been determined by Quest Diagnostics. It has not been cleared or approved by FDA. This assay has been validated pursuant to the CLIA regulations and is used for clinical purposes.
Setup Schedule
A.M.
Clinical Significance
Approximately 1-2% of individuals with primary hypertension have primary hyperaldosteronism characterized by hypokalemia (low potassium) and low direct renin. Because serum aldosterone concentrations vary due to dietary sodium intake and body position, some physicians prefer measurement of 24-hour urine concentrations for aldosterone.
