Rapid TEG with Heparinase

Message
Performed in Coagulation
BUMCP ONLY: Samples may be transported through the pneumatic tube system however you must call 839-3471 PRIOR to collection. Send the sample at room temperature immediately after collection. Place a green TEG slip in the sample bag to ensure priority handling. If you transport by hand to the Laboratory, ensure you deliver directly to Coagulation.

NOTE: Other locations MUST walk the specimens to lab - DO NOT TUBE DOWN.

Test Code
RTEG/HEP

Preferred Specimen
NaCit tube, blue-top tube
Whole blood collected in a 3.2% Sodium Citrate tube - FULL TUBE required.

Instructions
For samples drawn by venipuncture, use a 21-gauge needle. The first 3 mL of blood should not be used for TEG testing due to the possible contaminants in the sample during normal phlebotomy. Draw a discard tube if the only sample being drawn will be for TEG testing.

For line draws the first 7 mL of blood should be discarded.

Transport Temperature
Ambient

Specimen Stability
Must be tested within 2 hours of collection

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Whole blood samples not collected in a 3.2% sodium citrate tube
Underfilled of overfilled
Clotted specimens
Samples contaminated with tissue contaminants
Refrigerated, chilled on ice or frozen

Reference Range

Clinical Significance
Provides a rapid functional measurement of clotting factors, platelets, and fibrinogen, providing a global view of clot rate, strength, and stability in the presence of heparin for patients at risk for coagulopathy. Primarily intended for use in trauma patients but may be considered in other situations requiring rapid assessment of coagulation.

Performing Laboratory
Performed on-site
