Test Code
STEG/MAP/HEP

Preferred Specimen
1 - Na Citrate Tube (Light Blue Top) Full
1 - Na HEP Tube (Dark Green top) Full, NO GEL

Instructions
For samples drawn by venipuncture, use a 21-gauge needle. The first 3 mL of blood should not be used for TEG testing due to the possible contaminants in the sample during normal phlebotomy. Draw a discard tube if the only sample being drawn will be for TEG testing.

For line draws the first 7 mL of blood should be discarded.

Note: Transport at room temperature immediately after collection. DO NOT CENTRIFUGE.

Transport Temperature
Ambient

Specimen Stability
Must be tested within 2 hours of collection

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Whole blood samples not collected in a 3.2% sodium citrate tube
Whole blood sample collected in a heparin gel tube
Underfilled of overfilled
Clotted specimens
Samples contaminated with tissue contaminants
Refrigerated, chilled on ice or frozen
Centrifuged specimens
A blood sample not allowed to equilibrate from time of draw (10 minutes for citrated tubes and 30 minutes for heparin tubes) or is too old and past stability time frame for test ordered.
Samples sent via the tube station unless approved by the Pathologist or validation has been performed.

Clinical Significance
In the presence of heparin, provides a comprehensive, functional assessment of hemostasis to determine the presence of antiplatelet medications and assist in directing therapy in cardiovascular patients.

Performing Laboratory
