Preferred Specimen

10 mL gastric lavage • 5 mL pericardial fluid, peritoneal fluid, pleural fluid • 2 grams fresh (unfixed) tissue or tissue biopsy collected in a sterile leak-proof container • 3 mL whole blood collected in an EDTA (lavender-top), or ACD (yellow-top) tube
Instructions
Gastric lavage: Collect 10 mL (5 mL minimum) of an early morning specimen, before food or water intake, in a sterile container without preservative. Adjust to normal pH with 100 mg of sodium carbonate within 4 hours of collection, and mix thoroughly. Non-neutralized specimens are not acceptable. Separate specimens collected on 3 consecutive days are recommended.
