Instructions
Avoid seafood consumption for 48 hours prior to collection. Avoid worksite collection.
24-hour urine collection. Specimen must be collected in a plastic container and should be refrigerated during collection.
Transport Container
Transfer a 7 mL aliquot from a well-mixed 24-hour collection to 2 trace element-free transport tubes (Available from Client Services supply #43116) (Min: 2 mL). Record total volume on transport tube and on test request form.
Transport Temperature
Refrigerated.
Specimen Stability
Ambient: 48 hours; Refrigerated: 5 days; Frozen: 14 days

Limitations
Tests performed on a specimen submitted in a non-trace element tube may not accurately reflect the patient's level. If a non-trace element tube/container is received, it will be accepted for testing. However, elevated results shall be reported with a message that re-submission with a trace element tube/container is recommended.

Clinical Significance
Excessive exposure to heavy metals can cause acute chronic toxicity. Heavy metals panel is intended to evaluate and monitor exposure to heavy metals and evaluate the process of detoxification. Excessive cadmium exposure can damage lungs, kidneys, and the digestive tract.
