Clinical Significance
Patients may be screened for the presence of sickle cell disease or sickle cell trait by use of a reagent which results in increased turbidity of the specimen in the presence of a sickling hemoglobin. This test is not specific for Hemoglobin S, as there are other sickling hemoglobins, such as Hemoglobin C Harlem, which will result in a positive test. It is therefore recommended that all positive sickle screens be followed up by identification of the presence and amount of abnormal hemoglobin using electrophoretic separation techniques. While the laboratory currently offers both tests individually, this new reflexive panel will allow us to add the confirmatory electrophoresis to a positive sickle cell screen automatically.
