Clinical Significance
Measurement of myoglobin is used to assess muscular damage from any cause. Elevated serum myoglobin levels may result from strenuous body activity, muscle trauma, myopathies, resuscitation, shock, or decreased elimination in patients with impaired renal function. Rhabdomyolysis leads to extreme elevations. Elevation is nonspecific for acute myocardial infarction.
