Serum separator tube (gold top preferred) or a plain red top tube.

Transport Container
Centrifuge the serum separator tube and transport; if a plain red top tube, centrifuge and aliquot serum (Min. 0.2 mL) into a standard transport tube.

Transport Temperature
Refrigerated.

Specimen Stability
After separation from cells: Room temperature: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: 30 days

Clinical Significance
Measurement of myoglobin is used to assess muscular damage from any cause. Elevated serum myoglobin levels may result from strenuous body activity, muscle trauma, myopathies, resuscitation, shock, or decreased elimination in patients with impaired renal function. Rhabdomyolysis leads to extreme elevations. Elevation is nonspecific for acute myocardial infarction.
