Random or 24-hour urine. Refrigerate during collection.

Transport Container
Laboratory notes: Mix well and adjust pH to 8-9 by adding 10 percent Na2CO3 drop-wise to the random urine or 5 grams Na2CO3 to the entire 24-hour collection immediately after collection. (Myoglobin is unstable in urine, unless the pH is 8.0-9.0) Transfer 1 mL aliquot from a well-mixed random or 24-hour collection to a standard transport tube. (Min: 0.5 mL) (Available from Client Services supply #R10001 for Random urine or supply #R10002 for 24 hour urine.)

Clinical Significance
Patients with urine myoglobin greater than 15 mg/L are at risk of acute renal failure. Usual results are less than 1 mg/L. Results between 1 and 15 mg/L are associated with vigorous exercise, myocardial infarct, mild muscle injury, and other conditions.
