Instructions
Patient should refrain from taking vitamins or mineral supplements at least three days prior to specimen collection.
Avoid worksite collection.

Royal blue (no additives)(Available from Client Services supply #16359) or royal blue (EDTA)(Available from Client Services supply #16313).


Transport Container
Do not allow serum or plasma to remain on cells. Centrifuge royal blue and aliquot 2 mL serum or plasma within 1 hour of collection. (Min: 0.7 mL) Submit specimen in a trace element-free transport tube. (Available from Client Services supply #43116) Royal Blue Sodium Heparin tube is also acceptable.


Transport Temperature
Refrigerated.


Specimen Stability
After separation from cells: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 14 days; Frozen: 30 days


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Separator tubes. Hemolysis.

Clinical Significance
Selenium is an element of parental nutrition. Monitoring the selenium concentrations is useful in assessing parental nutrition, especially recent intake. Concentrations are also monitored in children with proprionic acidemia who require special diets with supplements
