Instructions
Materials needed:
ThinPrep Preservcyte collection vial (Client Supply #P70098) along with a Plastic Spatula/Brush combination OR Broom collection device.

Collection:

Ayre Spatula--Scrape the ectocervical area around the endocervical os with the ayre spatula using a rotating motion. Rinse the end of the spatula in the Preservcyte vial by agitating in fixative to remove material from the spatula.
Endocervical Brush--Using the endocervical brush insert the brush tip into the endocervical canal and rotate one half to one complete turn. Rinse the brush tip in the Preservcyte vial by agitating and pressing the brush bristles against the side of the vial to remove material from the brush.

OR

Broom--Insert the long bristles into the endocervical canal until the shorter bristles contact the extocervical surface. Rotate the broom device in a clockwise direction only, one complete turn. Rinse the broom device in the Preservcyte vial by agitating and pressing the bristles against the sides of the collection vial to remove material from the broom.

Transport Container
After collection of the sample into the Preservcyte vial, place the lid on the vial and secure until the lid is tight and the black reference marks on the lid align or pass the reference marks on the vial. Clinical Significance
Bacterial, yeast, viral and parasitic infections in women typically cause vaginitis, urethritis, and cervicitis. Common symptoms include vaginal discharge, vulvovaginal irritation, and/or dysuria. However, recurrent and/or untreated sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can result in ectopic pregnancy, infertility, and the possible risk of physical and developmental disabilities in fetus, including fetal death in few cases. Healthcare providers must assess the risk of STIs and provide counseling for prevention and treatment for all women of childbearing age. Nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) is analytically more sensitive than culture and antigen detection methods and is recommended for targeted STI screening and prevention.

The CT NAAT, with PAP offers a combined menu to screen for cervical cancer using the Liquid Based Pap and testing for STD infection using molecular techniques. This helps physicians to get multiple actionable results in a timely manner using clinically-proven technologies. The panel detects Chlamydia trachomatis in addition to the Liquid Based Pap.
