Preferred Specimen
Transferring the Urine sample using the straw
Position: Place the urine collection cup on a clean, flat surface.
Submerge Straw: Submerge the tip of the transfer straw into the collected urine specimen in the cup.
Fill Tubes:
○ 1st - C&S Tube: Insert the stopper end of the grey-top C&S tube into the opening of the transfer straw. Hold it in place until the tube fills completely and then remove it. Shake the tube vigorously to mix the preservative.
Note: Collect the Grey C&S vial FIRST.
○ 2nd - Plain UA Tube (4ML): Leave the transfer straw submerged in the urine sample. Insert the stopper end of the plain UA tube into the opening of the transfer straw. Hold it in position until the tube fills completely and then remove it. Invert the UA preservative tube 8-10 times to mix the sample.
Note: if additional tests are required, additional vials may be needed
Discarding Straw: Lift the transfer straw from the cup and discard it in a sharps container after transferring all necessary samples.
Post Collection procedures
Labeling: Label all filled tubes accurately with patient information (name, date of birth, date/time of collection) and any other required details.
Correctly document collection date/time and SOURCE. The specimen types CCU, Foley, Straight Cath are NOT interchangeable.

UA with reflex culture

Patient collects a Clean catch Mid-Stream specimen in a sterile container
Transport Container
Transport
Place specimen in a transport bag. Place any additional order labels in the outside of the bag.
MWH ER and IN- Transport Urine specimens to the Lab within 2 hours
Outreach sites- Refrigerate all containers at 4°C. Transport within 6 hours.

Refrigerate if specimen cup cannot be tested immediately. Specimen good for 24 hrs of collection if refrigerated
