Isolation of potential respiratory pathogens can be useful in the diagnosis of respiratory tract infection. This specimen may contain normal oral flora. The significance of any isolate must be evaluated with this in mind.
Note: All bacterial isolates worked up, to rule in or out as a pathogen, will be billed for work performed and resources consumed.
Note: When this test is ordered, the reflex tests such as susceptibilities as appropriate, may be performed at an additional charge.
Note: A gram stain is performed to evaluate specimen quality on Expectorated Sputum specimen and may not qualify for culture.
Note: If source is documented as Sputum without either expectorated or induced, specimen will be treated as an Expectorated sputum.
Note: Ordering Guidance - if Mycobacterial (AFB) organism is suspected, order Mycobacterial Culture; If yeast or mold is suspected, order Fungal Culture.
Note: If additional tests are also requested send as much specimen as possible and order appropriate additional tests.
