Specimen source (type of catheter tip) is required
Specimen must arrive as soon as possible after collection.
Unacceptable specimens:
Foley or urinary catheter
1. Disinfect skin around catheter with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Allow to dry.
2. Cleanse skin around catheter with iodine. Allow to dry.
3. Aseptically remove catheter. Avoid contamination with normal flora from skin or other body surfaces.
4. Submit 2 cm to 3 cm of distal intravascular tip and proximal transcutaneous segment, or entire short catheter in a screw-capped, sterile container.
5. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), Social Security number or date of birth (inpatients: medical record number), date and time of collection, collector’s initials, and type of specimen.
6. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only. Do not refrigerate.
7. If purulence at catheter exit site is evident, send pus for culture and Gram stain.
