Clinical Significance
Trichomonas vaginalis (TV), the most common curable non-viral sexually transmitted disease (STD) agent in the United States, can cause vaginitis, urethritis, cervicitis and prostatitis. Complications from Trichomoniasis can include premature labor, low-birth weight offspring, and premature rupture of membranes. Per the CDC, routine screening of asymptomatic women with HIV infection is recommended. Some infected women have vaginal discharge that might be diffuse, malodorous, or yellow-green with or without vulvar irritation. Most infected persons (70%-85%) have minimal or no symptoms, and untreated infections might last for months to years.
