Clinical Significance
Antigen typing is based on the principle of agglutination. Normal human red blood cells, possessing antigens, will agglutinate in the presence of antibody directed toward the antigens. Antigen typing can be performed using patient plasma (also called screening crossmatch) to screen for units prior to antigen typing when a clinically significant antibody is present and for crossmatch compatible units when a clinically insignificant antibody is present.
